Boxer apologizes for 'inexcusable' acts

LONDON, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- British heavyweight Dereck Chisora apologized Monday for his "inexcusable" behavior before and after his WBC fight with Vitali Klitscho.

"I feel I must wholeheartedly apologize for my part in the regrettable scenes both before and after what was to be the biggest night of my career," Chisora said in a statement.

Chisora slapped Klitscho during weigh-in in Munich Friday and brawled during a post-fight press conference Saturday with fellow British boxer David Haye, Sky Sports reported.

"While my behavior was inexcusable, there were many things that went on behind the scenes that ultimately caused my frustrations to boil over. However, this is, of course, no excuse," Chisora said.

With the British Boxing Board of Control investigating, Chisora said he could not provide specifics but said he had been struck by a bottle during the altercation with Haye.

Sky Sports said Chisora, 28, had threatened to "shoot" Haye after the altercation, was arrested by Munich police Sunday and released after questioning early Monday.

Chisora lost the fight on points Saturday night.

In the statement, Chisora said: "The bottom line is, I have let my family, my team and worst of all, the sport I love down. I acknowledge that my actions were totally unprofessional, with or without provocation. Now, with a cool head and the benefit of hindsight, my actions at the weekend were regrettable, to say the least, and I am deeply embarrassed at the scenes reported in the media."

He said he had "fully cooperated" with German authorities in Munich and was released without being charged.
