LOS ANGELES, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Mike Smith made 28 saves Thursday while recording his fourth shutout of the season and bringing the Phoenix Coyotes a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles.
The four shutouts are the most Smith has recorded in a single season during six-year NHL career. He posted his sixth straight victory and boosted the Coyotes into a second-place tie with the Kings in the Pacific Division.
Radim Vrbata scored the only goal of the game with 4:01 to play in the second period, while Los Angeles was playing shorthanded for having too many men on the ice. It was Vrbata's 27th goal of the season.
There were 40 minutes of penalties called in the opening period, during which there were three stoppages for fighting.
Jonathan Quick made 20 saves in taking the hard-luck loss.
