17 months for Stanley Cup rioter

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- The first participant to plead guilty in the June 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver, British Columbia, was sentenced to 17 months in jail.

Ryan Dickinson, 20, of Coquitlam, was sentenced Thursday in Vancouver Provincial Court to the jail sentence and two years of probation after pleading guilty to a count of participating in a riot and violating his probation from an unrelated assault charge, the Vancouver Sun reported Friday.

"Mr. Dickinson's participation was serious and involved a number of conscious and deliberate decisions on his part, starting with his decision to go downtown knowing that would result in a breach of his bail," Judge Malcolm MacLean said in handing down the sentence.

The conditions of Dickinson's probation include staying away from alcohol and drugs as well as seeking counseling and finding employment or attending school full time.

Prosecutors said they have brought 140 charges against 52 people from the June 15, 2011, riots.
