Anderson edges into SAP Open second round

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 14 (UPI) -- No. 5-seeded Kevin Anderson needed to win a pair of tiebreakers Monday in claiming a first-round win at the SAP Open tennis tournament in California.

Anderson just got by Grigor Dimitrov 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) in about 2 1/2 hours. He managed just one break point in the match but was able to save the three break points he faced in the third set to force the decisive tiebreaker.

Both players had solid serving games. Dimitrov won 77 percent of the points on serve while Anderson managed 71 percent and Dimitrov won more points (108-101) than Anderson but Anderson's success in the tiebreakers proved the difference.

Also Monday, Tobias Kamke was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Izak Van Der Merwe. Kamke held on all four of the break points he faced and had a break in each set to advance to the second round.
