BAMBERG, Germany, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela and Germany's Cedrik-Marcel Stebe split singles matches Sunday in the countries' Davis Cup first-round series.
Argentina had swept Friday's singles and the doubles match Saturday to secure the best-of-five series win. Argentina, last year's Davis Cup runner-up, goes against Croatia in the quarterfinals. Croatia was a 3-2 winner over Japan in its first-round series.
Chela opened Sunday's play with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Florian Mayer in which he had just five unforced errors. He posted two breaks in each set.
Stebe claimed the face-saving win for Germany, beating Eduardo Schwank 7-5 (7-1), 7-5. The seesaw match featured a total of nine service breaks but Stebe's fifth of the day came in the 12th game of the second set and completed his win.
