Ex-major leaguer Clyburn slain in S.C.

LANCASTER, S.C., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Former major league baseball player Danny Clyburn Jr. was shot and killed outside his Lancaster, S.C., home Tuesday, police said.

Authorities said Clyburn, 37, was found dead in his front yard about 2 a.m. and that a 36-year-old man had turned himself into police, The (Rock Hill, S.C.) Herald reported.

Police said witnesses claim Clyburn -- who played for the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles during a three-year big-league career -- was arguing with another man before he was shot.

Derrick Lamont Mcilwain, also of Lancaster, was in custody charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the newspaper said.

Clyburn logged a total of 41 games for Baltimore and Tampa Bay between 1997-99, batting .211 with four homers and eight runs batted in.
