Berdych tops Monfils in Montpellier final

MONTPELLIER, France, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Tomas Berdych beat Gael Monfils in three sets Sunday in taking the championship match at the Sud de France Open tennis tournament.

Berdych battled Monfils for more than 2 hours before finishing off a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win. It was his seventh ATP title in 13 finals appearances. Monfils, who won the tournament in 2010, fell to 4-13 in tournament finals.

Monfils, the No. 3 seed, got his only break of the match in the second set, but Berdych came back with his third of the day in winning the third set. Berdych, who won two-thirds of the points on serve in the match, dropped just eight points serving in the third set.

Berdych collected more than $94,500 for the win. Monfils' second-place check was worth about $50,000.
