MONTPELLIER, France, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Tomas Berdych dropped just two games Thursday in collecting a second-round win at the Sud de France Open tennis tournament.

He advances to the quarterfinals against Nicolas Mahut, who was a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 winner over sixth-seeded Florian Mayer Thursday. Mahut finished off both of his break-point chances in the second set in the win.

No. 3 Gael Monfils posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Michael Russell. Monfils had more aces (17) than points lost (13) on serve. His quarterfinal opponent will be eighth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen, who beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in the final match Thursday.

Friday's other quarterfinals have fourth-seeded Richard Gasquet playing No. 7-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Berdych-Mahut half of the draw and second-seeded Gilles Simon meeting Guillaume Rufin in the other.

There is at least one French player in each quarterfinal. Simon and Rufin are both French while countrymen Mahut, Gasquet and Monfils play in the other matches.
