Penguins: Crosby suffered neck injury

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has been suffering from a neck injury as well as a concussion since last month, the team said Saturday.

Crosby has been out of the Penguins lineup since Dec. 5 when he was hit by Boston's David Krejci, suffering from what had been described as concussion-like symptoms.

The team statement Saturday indicated a recent examination revealed he had also sustained damage to his neck, which is now fully healed.

"The diagnosis of Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, is that Sidney Crosby had suffered a neck injury in addition to a concussion. Dr. Bray reports that the neck injury is fully healed," the statement said.

"Those findings will be evaluated by independent specialists over the next few days. The most important goal all along has been Sidney's return to full health, and we are encouraged that progress continues to be made."

The 24-year-old has played in only eight games this season after missing more than 10 months after suffering a concussion in January 2011.
