Wind gusts disrupt play at La Quinta

LA QUINTA, Calif., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Third-round play of the Humana Challenge was suspended Saturday due to dangerous wind gusts in La Quinta, Calif.

The PGA West course at La Quinta was pounded by strong winds, during which trees, tents and scoreboards were toppled by the gusts.

A horn sounded at 1:13 p.m. to signal a suspension in play.

Mark Wilson was the leader at 21-under par after completing 15 holes of the third round.

Officials said play would resume at 10:30 a.m., to be immediately followed by the final round with just professionals, no amateurs.

Former President Bill Clinton was among the celebrity amateurs making an appearance at the event formerly known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic.
