OKLAHOMA CITY, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The Oklahoma City Thunder announced Thursday they have signed guard Russell Westbrook to a contract extension. Multiple reports said the deal was for five years and worth $80 million.
Westbrook was the fourth overall selection in the 2008 draft and, along with star Kevin Durant, became a major factor in Oklahoma City reaching the Western Conference finals last year.
In 15 games this season he has averaged 20.5 points per contest.
"We are thrilled to solidify Russell's future with the Thunder," General Manager Sam Presti said. "Russell's work ethic, persistence, character, and involvement in our community have helped us establish the standards that we are committed to on a day-to- day basis.
"He is a valued member of our organization and we look forward to his continued contributions on and off the floor."
Westbrook has never missed a game in his four seasons with the Thunder. He is among the 20 finalists for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team.
