HOBART, Australia, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Qualifier Mona Barthel lost three games Saturday in beating top-seeded Yanina Wickmayer at the Moorilla International in Australia for her first WTA title.
Barthel completed a string of upset wins with a 6-1, 6-2 romp past Wickmayer. She was good on an impressive 82 percent of her first serves and won two-thirds of the points on serve.
She also took 62 percent of the points off Wickmayer's serve, piling up six breaks in seven receiving games.
Barthel won a pair of matches to qualify for the main draw and, after a first-round win over unseeded Romina Oprandi, ran off four consecutive wins over seeded players.
She beat second-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues in the second round, eliminated fifth-seeded Jarmila Gajdosova in the quarterfinals and No. 4-seeded Angelique Kerber in the semis in advancing to her first WTA title match. Gajdosova, the Moorilla defending champion, was the only opponent to take Barthel to three sets.
Barthel collected $37,000 for the championship and Wickmayer was given the runner-up check for $19,000.
