Xinjiang player cut for fake injury

XINJIANG, China, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Patrick Mills, former NBA player and backcourt leader for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, was cut from the team for faking an injury, officials say.

Mills had not been on the court since Dec. 23 after which he requested to sit out for another two weeks because of a torn hamstring, The Australian reports. Mills alleged that he had MRIs to prove the injury; however, when team doctors in China examined him, they said they found that the hamstring was not torn, only swelling, the report said.

General Manager Hou Wei issued a statement saying: "Due to a fake injury, the Xinjiang team has cut the foreign player Mills."

A Basketball Australia spokesman told the Australian that due to contractual issues, Mills cannot sign with any other professional team until after the end of the current CBA season.
