NHL: Carolina 4, New Jersey 2

RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Cam Ward notched his 12th win of the season with 23 saves and was credited with a goal Monday in the Carolina Hurricanes' 4-2 victory over New Jersey.

Ward became the 12th goalie in NHL history, and the first for the Hurricanes, to score a goal.

He scored after the Devils had pulled their goalie for a sixth attacker as time was winding down. Ilya Kovalchuk tried to pass it to Adam Henrique at the point but the puck got past him, rolling all the way down the ice and into the empty New Jersey net.

Ward was credited with the goal because he was the last Hurricanes player to touch the puck.

Brandon Sutter, Tuomo Ruutu and Anthony Stewart scored as Carolina won for third time in five games.

Henrique and David Clarkson made it close for New Jersey with third-period tallies.

Johan Hedberg made 30 saves for the Devils.
