NHL: Buffalo 4, Washington 2

BUFFALO, N.Y., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Christian Ehrhoff highlighted a big first period with the eventual game-winning goal Monday, powering the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-2 victory over Washington.

Brayden McNabb, Matt Ellis and Jason Pominville also scored in the four-goal first-period explosion for Buffalo, which snapped a three-game losing streak.

Ryan Miller turned aid 20-of-22 shots to collect the win.

The Sabres' early assault chased Washington starter Michal Neuvirth from the net after he allowed three goals on the first six shots he faced. Tomas Vokoun relieved and stopped 16-of-17 shots the rest of the way.

Matt Hendricks and Alex Ovechkin scored for the Caps.
