NHL: Pittsburgh 8, Buffalo 3

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin netted three goals and added two assists Saturday, powering the Penguins to an 8-3 rout of Buffalo.

Malkin completed his hat trick with a power-play tally 11:43 into the final period, racking up his fourth career five-point game. The Pittsburgh center continued to help make up for the absence of Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, notching six goals and six assists in the last five games.

He scored twice in the first period as the Pens netted three consecutive goals within the game's first 10 minutes to set the tone.

Deryk Engelland, Chris Kunitz, James Neal and Jason Williams each added a goal and an assist and Marc-Andre Fluery turned aside 16-of-19 shots in Pittsburgh's victory.

Buffalo's Ryan Miller was chased from the game midway through the second period after allowing five goals on 15 shots. Backup Jhonas Enroth didn't fare much better, stopping 8-of-11 the rest of the way.

Thomas Vanek, Luke Adam and Paul Gaustad scored for the Sabres.
