CHICAGO, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Former Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd was free on bond Saturday after denying charges he was operating a sizable drug-trafficking operation.
A federal judge Friday agreed to release Hurd on a $100,000 cash bond following two nights in the Chicago lockup where he had been lodged after being busted for conspiracy to distributing cocaine.
Hurd's attorney, Brett Greenfield, told reporters after the hearing the charges were "patently and totally false."
"Sam has never been in any trouble," Greenfield said. "He is a good player and a good teammate."
Hurd's performance on the field and relationships with his teammates apparently weren't good enough to prevent the Bears from waiving him Friday.
Federal prosecutors have said Hurd, who was making $2 million this season with the Bears, allegedly told an informant he needed to move significant volumes of cocaine and marijuana every week.
Hurd came to the attention of the feds earlier this year when one of his associates was pulled over in the Dallas area carrying $88,000 in cash while driving a car registered to Hurd, the Chicago Tribune said Saturday.
