Work at Marlins Stadium questioned

MIAMI, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The Miami Marlins Stadium's retractable roof originally included some substandard welding, documents from local officials show.

The Miami Herald said it obtained internal documents on the problem from the office of the Miami-Dade County inspector general.

They show a subcontractor allegedly supplied false information on inspections of some welding.

David Samson, president of the Marlins, said the team wants the re-inspection.

"That's great for us," Samson said. "I hope he's looking at everything in the ballpark -- everything.''

Inspector General Christopher Mazzella declined comment.

Roy Fastabend, a welder at the stadium, told WFOR-TV he was fired after he questioned some of the inspections on the project.

The $634 million project in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood is almost complete. The news media was given a tour Tuesday.
