Prosecutors want 15 months for Bonds

NEW YORK, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Federal prosecutors in New York are recommending Barry Bonds serve 15 months in prison for his evasive testimony during a steroid investigation.

Prosecutors said in a filing to U.S. District Judge Susan Illston that the former San Francisco Giants player, who was convicted of obstruction of justice for his evasive testimony before a grand jury, engaged in "a calculated plan to obfuscate and distract the grand jury from getting to the truth" about the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative in Burlingame, which distributed steroids to professional athletes, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday.

Bonds is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 16.

Defense attorneys have asked Illston to impose a sentence of probation and a short period of house arrest. They have also indicated an intention to appeal the conviction.
