Hockey coach admits child sex abuse

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Former Canadian junior hockey coach Graham James Wednesday pleaded guilty to charges he molested two young players, including former NHL star Theoren Fleury.

James made the plea in a Winnipeg courtroom via a video link from Montreal, Canadian broadcaster CTV reported.

The former coach also pleaded guilty to sexual assault in the 1990s involving two teenage victims, including former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy, and served a 3 1/2-year prison sentence.

Fleury and two other ex-players told Winnipeg police last year James had molested them as minors as well. James admitted guilt in connection with Fleury and a victim whose name was not disclosed, while charges centering around 47-year-old Greg Gilhooly were stayed, the broadcaster reported.

Fleury said James, 59, deserves a life sentence for his crimes.

"It took me 27 years to get comfortable in my own skin. To me, that's a pretty decent sentence," he said.

Sentencing is set for Feb. 22, CTV reported.
