DENVER, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Lee Stempniak got the eventual game-winning goal and added an assist Saturday in the Calgary Flames' 4-3 win over Colorado.
Paul Byron and Jarome Iginla each scored within the game's first 6 minutes, giving Calgary a quick lead, and Curtis Glencross made it 3-0 later in the frame with a wrist shot from the slot.
Stempniak gave Calgary a 4-0 lead early in the second period when he got control of the puck behind the Colorado net, spun around and put a backhander past Semyon Varlamov.
The Flames ended up needing all the scores as the Avalanche notched consecutive goals by Milan Hejduk, Matt Duchene and David Jones, who tallied with 4:35 remaining in the game.
But Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside 36-of-39 shots, hanging on for the victory.
Varlamov ended with 20 saves for the Avalanche.
