NHL: Phoenix 4, Colorado 1

DENVER, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Mike Davis allowed only a second-period goal Wednesday and Radim Vrbata scored twice to bring the Phoenix Coyotes a 4-1 victory over Colorado.

The Coyotes won their third straight, benefiting from another solid performance in goal by Davis.

Davis gave up six goals on the opening night of the season, but has allowed an average of two a game since then. He improved to 5-2 for the season, stopping 39 shots.

The only goal against Davis came on a slap shot from Ryan O'Reilly with 1:37 left in the second period that cut Colorado's deficit to 2-1.

Lauri Korpikoski then gave Phoenix some breathing room by scoring 24 seconds into the third period and Vrbata produced an empty-net goal with 1:33 to go in the third. Vrbata's first goal came with 2:03 remaining in the second and gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead. He has five goals for the season.

Semyon Varlamov stopped 24-of-27 shots to take the loss.
