Boudreau chose not to put his superstar forward on the ice during the final 90 seconds of the Caps' 5-4 comeback overtime victory over the Anaheim Ducks Tuesday.
The decision paid off as Niklas Backstrom scored a late goal and tallied again in overtime for the victory, but television cameras caught an angry Ovechkin having a heated exchange with Boudreau on the bench, NHL.com reported.
Both the coach and the player said Wednesday there will be no lingering effects from the incident, which Boudreau said was part of an ongoing emphasis on rewarding and restricting play based on performance.
"At the time, you don't have that much time to think. Like I said last night, I was playing a hunch," Boudreau said.
Ovechkin told the Web site he was upset at the time but understood the move.
"It is one team, and it doesn't matter how good you are or who you are," he said. "We have to be on the same page."
