FRISCO, Texas, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Joel Lindpere broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute Wednesday and New York survived a late red card to defeat Dallas 2-0 in the MLS playoff opener.
New York, which had the lowest point total of any of the post-season teams, will take on top-seeded Los Angeles in a two-match, aggregate score battle. New York will host the first of the two matches Sunday.
Lindpere put a left-footed shot from the middle of the penalty area past Kevin Hartman to give New York the lead and Frank Rost made seven saves to help create the upset.
Thierry Henry added a goal in the 8th minute of stoppage time.
Dallas was unable to capitalize on the expulsion of Jan Gunnar Solli in the 79th minute. Solli was given a direct red card for a hard foul on Daniel Hernandez.
The other MLS wild-card contest will be played Thursday, between Colorado and Columbus. The winner of that one will face Kansas City.
Salt Lake will face Seattle and Philadelphia will take on Houston in the other two quarterfinal match-ups.
