Jason McLeod was tapped as the club's senior vice president of scouting and player development.

The hirings were announced only one day after team owner Tom Ricketts introduced former Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein as the Cubs' new chief baseball executive.

Both Hoyer and McLeod come to Chicago from San Diego. Hoyer has served as the Padres' general manager since 2009 while McLeod was the team's assistant GM.

Both have also worked with Epstein previously in the Red Sox organization.

The Cubs announced they have agreed to send the Padres a player to be named later as compensation.

The Padres said Josh Byrnes, the team's senior vice president of baseball operations, will take over as Hoyer's successor starting Oct. 31.
