Anderson, Baghdatis win in Vienna openers

VIENNA, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Kevin Anderson and Marcos Baghdatis claimed victories Monday in first-round play at the Erste Bank Open tennis tournament in Vienna.

Anderson, seeded sixth, defeated Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-4, 6-4. Anderson had 10 aces and saved all five of the break points he faced while winning more than three-quarters of the points on serve.

The difference in the match was that Anderson converted two of the nine break-point opportunities he had.

Haider-Maurer was the Erste Bank runner-up last year, losing to fellow Austrian Jurgen Melzer. It's the only finals appearance of Haider-Maurer's ATP career.

Anderson will face Baghdatis in the second round. Baghdatis beat Ryan Sweeting 6-4, 6-2 with four service breaks. Baghdatis, who matched Anderson's total of 10 aces, lost only seven points on serve in the second set.

World No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, trying to grab one of the final invitations to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, is the top seed in Vienna.
