Marino has upset win in Luxembourg

LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Rebecca Marino defeated second-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a first-round upset Tuesday at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open tennis tournament.

Marino pulled off the 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 upset in about an hour and a half by piling up six service breaks over the last two sets. Marino ended up winning nearly as many points (42-44) on Pavlyuchenkova's serve as Pavlyuchenkova managed.

Lucie Hradecka also advanced to the second round at the expense of a seeded player with a 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-1 win over No. 8 Daniela Hantuchova. Hradecka saved all six of Hantuchova's break-point chances.

Sixth-seeded Julia Goerges managed to get out of the first round, beating Elena Baltacha 7-5, 6-1. Goerges won more than two-thirds of the points in the second set.

Tuesday's other results saw Alberta Brianti top Anna Tatishvili 6-3, 1-6, 6-3; Alexandra Cadantu beat Anastasiya Yakimova 6-1, 6-4; and Monica Niculescu get past Karin Knapp 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) in a match that took 3 hours, 41 minutes.
