Seppi heads to Kremlin Cup second round

MOSCOW, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- No. 8-seeded Andreas Seppi rallied for a three-set victory Monday in opening-day play of the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow.

Seppi just got by Igor Andreev 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). He won just three more points (93-90) than Andreev over the course of the match.

Seppi lost serve three times, including once in the final set, but managed a break of his own that sent the match into the third-set tiebreaker.

Mikhail Kukushkin also took a tight match, beating Lukas Rosol 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 behind a pair of second-set service breaks. He advances to a second-round match against No. 1-seeded Janko Tipsarevic, who, as one of the top four seeds, has a first-round bye.

Pere Riba outlasted Andreas Haider-Maurer for a 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3 decision that sets up a second-round match against defending champion and second-seeded Viktor Troicki.

Also Monday, Teymuraz Gabashvili was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Karol Beck and draws fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in the next round and Igor Kunitsyn defeated Andrey Kuznetsov 7-5, 4-6, 6-3
