NHL: Phoenix 4, Winnipeg 1

GLENDALE, Ariz., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Daymond Langkow and Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored early and late in the first period Saturday, starting Phoenix on its way to a 4-1 win over Winnipeg.

The game was the first between the franchises that have represented Winnipeg in the NHL.

The original Winnipeg Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996. The current Winnipeg team came from Atlanta after the end of the 2010-2011 season.

The new Jets have yet to win in three games this season. Winnipeg has been outscored 13-5 in those three contests.

Langkow scored just 34 seconds into the game and Ekman-Larsson produced the first of his two goals with 48 seconds left in the opening period.

Ekman-Larsson added a goal on a slap shot with 5:03 to go in the middle period and Ray Whitney completed the scoring on the power play 6:43 into the third.

Winnipeg's only goal came on a tip-in from Andrew Ladd with 19 seconds to go in the middle stanza.

Mike Smith stopped 19 shots to get the win. Chris Mason allowed all four goals on 35 shots.
