TOKYO, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- American Jordyn Wieber, with top scores in the vault and balance beam, won the women's all-around title Thursday at the World Gymnastics championships in Tokyo.

Wieber, 16, helped the U.S. women to the team title Tuesday and took the all-round Thursday with a total score of 59.382. Russia's Victoria Komova was second at 49.349 and the bronze medal went to Chinese gymnast Yao Jiannan.

Wieber posted the high score of 15.716 in the vault, the first event Thursday, with Yao second and Komova third. However, an error by Wieber on the balance beam, where Komova had a competition-high 15.400, dropped Wieber behind the Russian.

Wieber cut into the deficit with a 15.266 in the balance beam going into the floor exercise.

Wieber had a 14.800, which ended up third-best, but Komova was scored at 14.333, allowing Wieber to win the gold medal.

The U.S. women won the team title, one day before China claimed a fifth consecutive men's team championship. The world championships continue through Sunday. The men's all-around is scheduled for Friday.
