NHL: Detroit 2, Vancouver 0

DETROIT, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots Thursday and the Detroit Red Wings ran their record to 3-0 with a 2-0 blanking of Vancouver.

The shutout was Howard's sixth since he became Detroit's top goaltender two seasons ago. He gave up three goals to Ottawa in his only other start this year.

The Detroit goals came 2:18 apart during the second period from Justin Abdelkader and Valtteri Filppula.

Cory Schneider made 35 saves for Vancouver, which is off to a 1-3 start in defense of its Western Conference title.
