NHL: Washington 6, Tampa Bay 5 (SO)

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Jason Chimera forced overtime with an unassisted goal late in the game Monday and the Washington Capitals bested Tampa Bay 6-5 in a shootout.

The Lightning had grabbed a 5-4 lead with 7 minutes remaining when Brett Clark's blind toss from along the endboards was mishandled by Caps goalie Tomas Vokoun and dribbled into the net.

With 2:44 left the Lightning's Dominic Moore attempted a clearing pass that went right onto Chimera's stick and the Washington forward blasted it home for the equalizer -- his second tally of the game.

Matt Hendricks and Alexander Semin scored in the shootout, handing the Caps their second straight win to start the season.

Vokoun ended with 28 saves, weathering two 4-on-3 Tampa Bay power plays in overtime.

Clark, Moore, Bruno Gervais and Teddy Purcell each registered a goal and an assist for the Bolts.

Lightning goalie Duane Roloson stopped 38-of-43 shots.
