Man collapses, dies at Chicago Marathon

CHICAGO, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A 35-year-old North Carolina man collapsed and died Sunday while running the Chicago Marathon, authorities said.

Paramedics told the Chicago Tribune the man went down while running through the city's near South Side, 500 yards from the finish line.

He was identified as William Caviness, a firefighter from Greensboro, N.C., the newspaper said.

Cardiac arrest was cited as a possible cause of death.

Caviness was running to benefit the International Association of Fire Fighters Burn Foundation.
