LA pol urging new Coliseum leadership

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles politician says the county should take control of the LA Memorial Coliseum and lead a major renovation of the historic stadium.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas sent a letter to the county counsel's office asking for guidance on dissolving the joint state, city, county commission that currently oversees the Coliseum.

"It is now clear to me the Coliseum's future viability will depend on a new operational structure," said Ridley-Thomas, who is also a member of the Coliseum Commission.

The Los Angeles Times said Saturday the plan to overhaul the Coliseum, the current home of the USC football team, has run into funding struggles and the commission's leadership has come under scrutiny for its spending.

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who is also on the commission, told the Times he agrees a change is necessary, but he favors a stronger private-sector element that would help position the Coliseum to better compete with venues such as the Rose Bowl and Home Depot Center.
