NHL: Dallas 2, Chicago 1

DALLAS, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Kari Lehtonen came within 14 seconds of a season-opening shutout and made 37 saves Friday in leading the Dallas Stars to a 2-1 victory over Chicago.

Nick Leddy beat Lehtonen with a slap shot as time wound down but the Stars held on to open the season successfully after barely missing the playoffs a year ago.

Alex Goligoski, obtained in a trade with Pittsburgh late last season, scored the first goal for Dallas 59 seconds into the middle period. Jamie Benn added a tally with 3:58 to go in the second.

Corey Crawford stopped 31 shots in taking the loss.

This is Lehtonen's third season with Dallas and his second as the team's leading goaltender.
