Rothstein bankruptcy lawyers target Don King

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Bankruptcy lawyers say they are seeking $700,000 from fight promoter Don King he received from Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein to sponsor a Florida boxing match.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports Rothstein had paid the $700,000 to sponsor a February 2009 fight at the BankAtlanta Center in Sunrise, Fla., billed the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre."

Rothstein got publicity for his law firm, Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler, and for the businesses he supported with stolen investor money, the Sun Sentinel said.

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in Fort Lauderdale, bankruptcy lawyers are seeking to get that money back from Don King Productions, based in Deerfield Beach.

King's company is the latest to be targeted to reimburse victims of Rothstein's $1.2 billion scheme, the Sun Sentinel said.

Rothstein had received advertising in signs at the venue for his law firm and other companies along with VIP tickets. The now-defunct firm and a few of his other businesses also were featured in ads in the program for the fight.

Alan Hopper, a representative for Don King Productions, declined to comment because the suit is ongoing litigation.

Rothstein, 49, who is serving a 50-year prison sentence, pleaded guilty to racketeering, money laundering and fraud after the Ponzi scheme collapsed in fall 2009.
