Charges against Denny McLain dropped

DETROIT, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Criminal charges against Detroit Tigers pitching great Denny McLain, facing extradition to Louisiana, have been dropped, Michigan authorities said.

McLain was arrested Sept. 22 on a warrant issued by the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana on charges he failed to pay some landowners money he owed them for scrap metal, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

McLain, 67, was arrested in Port Huron, Mich., after he was diverted by construction and accidentally drove on a bridge to Canada on his way to a restaurant.

Border officers ran his name and discovered the outstanding warrant.

McLain was not aware that a warrant had been issued until he was stopped at the border, his attorney said.

"Mr. McLain had no knowledge of this warrant. He was an accidental fugitive," attorney Josh Fahlsing said. "I think he's looking forward to getting this matter cleared up."

Authorities in New Orleans said the matter had been resolved and the charges against McLain were dropped, the Free Press reported.
