Ovechkin leaves Caps after death in family

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin returned home to Russia following a death in the family, the team said Monday.

Ovechkin, preparing along with his teammates for this week's NHL season opener, flew to Moscow to be with his family following the death of his uncle, The Washington Post reported.

A statement issued by the Capitals said: "Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to Alex and his family. We sincerely ask that you respect his privacy at this time."

A team spokesman told the newspaper the Capitals' captain will be back in time for the team's Saturday season opener in Washington against the Carolina Hurricanes.
