MLB: San Diego 2, Chicago Cubs 0

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Mat Latos and two relievers combined on a two-hit shutout Monday and the San Diego Padres handcuffed the Chicago Cubs 2-0.

Latos (9-14) surrendered only two hits over seven innings, issuing a single walk and striking out nine while tossing 67 of his 103 pitches for strikes.

Chad Qualls set the Cubs down in the eighth and Heath Bell got his 43rd save with a 1-2-3 ninth as the Padres won the opener of a season-ending, three-game series.

San Diego got both its runs in the sixth on a Will Venable solo homer and a Cameron Maybin RBI double.

Chicago's Casey Coleman (3-9) absorbed the loss, yielding two runs on five hits through 5 2/3 innings.
