McKeon, 80, to retire as Marlins manager

MIAMI, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Jack McKeon, at 80 the second-oldest manager in major league history, said Monday he won't return to lead the Florida Marlins next season.

McKeon was hired in June to take over for Edwin Rodriguez, who resigned with the Marlins having lost 10 straight to fall to 39-48 on the season.

Florida has been 28-35 the rest of the season under McKeon and will finish last in the National League East. The Marlins conclude their season with a three-game series at home against Washington.

It was his second stint as manager of the Marlins. He led the team from 2003-05 and Florida won the World Series on 2003 under his guidance.

His Florida teams were a combined 269-242. He also managed the Kansas City Royals (1973-75), Oakland Athletics (1977-78), San Diego Padres (1988-1990) and Cincinnati Reds (1997-2000). McKeon's overall managerial record is 1,039-978.

Only Connie Mack, who was 87 when he retired as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies after the 1950 season, was older while managing a major league team.
