KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Marcos Baghdatis collected an upset win Monday in first-round play at the Malaysian Open tennis tournament.
Baghdatis knocked out sixth-seeded Alex Bogomolov Jr. 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Baghdatis recorded the only service break of the match and lost only 19 points over his 11 service games.
No. 7-seeded Dmitry Tursunov was pushed to a third set in getting into the second round with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win over Paul Capdeville. He did drop serve twice but both breaks came in the second set.
David Goffin got past Matthew Ebden 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in a match that pitted wild-card entrants against each other. The match took more than an hour and a half and was even throughout. Goffin scored four more points -- three in the tiebreaker -- in winning the match.
The tournament features three Top 20 players, including No. 1-seeded Nicolas Almagro. The Malaysian Open champion, to be decided Sunday, will take home $155,000.
