Mayer moves on to Bucharest quarters

BUCHAREST, Romania, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Florian Mayer overcame a poor second set in claiming a quarterfinal slot Thursday at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy tournament in Romania.

Mayer defeated Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. He won 56 percent of the points in the first and third sets but only 37 percent in the second. In addition, three of his five service breaks were in the second set.

He moves into Friday's quarterfinals against Albert Ramos, who was a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victor over Pere Riba. Riba saved all three of the break points he faced in the first set but Ramos used a break in the second and two in the third to claim the match.

Filippo Volandri ousted third-seeded Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-3 by winning nearly 60 percent of the points in the match and Joao Souza battled for almost three hours in topping Adrian Ungur 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1. Volandri and Souza will meet in the quarterfinals.

No. 4-seeded Pablo Andujar breezed by Marius Copil 6-2, 6-3, dropping serve just once along the way, and qualifier Alessandro Giannessi continued his strong run with a 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 6-3 win over Frederico Gil.

The other quarterfinal, which was determined Wednesday, pits No. 1-seeded and defending champion Juan Ignacio Chela against seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi.
