Slater, 39, has won the Trestles event in southern Orange County five times and has three Association of Surfing Professionals titles this season.

Trestles was the third consecutive tournament in which Slater and Wright have met in the finals.

"Owen is tough and he's been surfing great," Slater said. "There really are no weak points to his surfing and he's going to be a standout in every spot."

Slater, who scored an 18.50 in his semifinal match against Brazilian Heitor Alves, leads second-place Wright in the season point standings 44,950-39,900.
