SAN DIEGO, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- San Diego's Tim Stauffer gave up four hits over 6 2/3 innings Friday and teamed with three relievers to blank Arizona 2-0.
The Diamondbacks lost their second straight and saw their lead over San Francisco in the National League West reduced to six games. Both clubs have 11 contests remaining and will meet three times next weekend in Phoenix.
Stauffer (8-12) struck out six before giving way to Anthony Bass with runners on first and second and two away in the seventh. Bass got Lyle Overbay to ground out to keep the shutout going.
Chad Qualls threw a perfect eighth for the Padres and Heath Bell retired the side in order in the ninth for his 38th save.
San Diego scored its runs in the first inning with Jesus Guzman producing an RBI single and then coming in to score when Arizona right fielder Gerardo Parra committed a fielding error trying to run down Nick Hundley's double.
Wade Miley (3-2) gave up the two first-inning runs and took the loss in a six-inning effort.
