16-year-old Thompson forges big lead

PRATTVILLE, Ala., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Sixteen-year-old Lexi Thompson's 5-under 67 at the Navistar Classic Saturday put her within reach of becoming the LPGA Tour's youngest-ever winner.

Thompson's third-round score gave her a five-shot lead at 15-under 201 heading into Sunday's finale at the Senator Course at RTJ Capitol Hill Golf Club.

Should she hang on for the title, Thompson would shatter the previous record for youngest tour winner. Paula Creamer won the 2005 Sybase Classic at the age of 18 years, 9 months, 17 days -- the LPGA record for a full tournament.

Thompson couldn't convert on her last chance to do so. She shared the third-round lead at this year's Avnet LPGA Classic but faltered on the final day, falling to 19th place.

Holding down a distant second place was Meena Lee (3-under 69) at minus-10.

Two shots further back were Becky Morgan (72), Karen Stupples (68) and Tiffany Joh (65).
