PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The first major league hit by Adron Chambers put St. Louis in front during a two-run 11th inning Friday and the Cardinals held on to defeat Philadelphia 4-2.
St. Louis prevented the Phillies from clinching the National League East title, but Philadelphia's magic number was reduced to one when Atlanta was crushed by the New York Mets.
A lone Philadelphia win or Atlanta loss the rest of the way will give the Phillies their fifth straight division crown. They have already clinched no worse than a wild-card playoff berth.
Philadelphia tied it at 2-2 in the ninth on an RBI double from Carlos Ruiz, but the Cardinals broke through against Michael Schwimer (1-1) in the 11th.
Chambers, called up from Class AAA Memphis this week, singled to right to drive in Furcal and Tyler Greene followed with a double that scored Pujols. Chambers was thrown out at home on the play.
