NEW YORK, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Ian Desmond collected five hits -- two fewer than New York had total -- and drove in three runs Thursday in a 10-1 Washington Nationals win over the Mets.
The Nationals broke open a 2-1 game with eight runs over the last three innings to complete a series sweep of the Mets. It is Washington's first four-game sweep in New York since September 2003 when the team played out of Montreal.
The Mets managed just five runs in the series and have lost six in a row overall.
Tom Milone (1-0) picked up his first major league win, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up three hits while walking three and striking out four. Five Nationals relievers combined for 3 1/3 innings of four-hit relief.
Desmond singled and scored a run as Washington went up 2-0 in the fifth inning off New York starter Chris Schwinden (0-2). The Mets got a run in the sixth on a Jason Bay double.
The Nationals made it 3-1 in the seventh when Steve Lombardozzi, who moved to third on a Desmond base hit, scored on a balk. Desmond singled in the first run in a three-run eighth inning and doubled in two more in a four-run ninth.
