KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Bruce Chen fired eight shutout innings Tuesday, baffling the Twins on two hits and lifting the Kansas City Royals to a 4-0 win over Minnesota.
Chen (11-7) issued only one walk and struck out eight, retiring 20 of the last 21 batters he faced while tossing 82 of his 119 pitches for strikes.
The Kansas City left-hander broke a two-game losing streak that followed victories in his five previous starts.
Alex Gordon went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBI while Mike Moustakas also went deep for the Royals, who won the first of a two-game set.
Minnesota's Carl Pavano (8-12) yielded four runs (three earned) on 11 hits over seven innings as the Twins lost for the ninth time in 10 games and fell to 8-29 since Aug. 3.
