Manny Ramirez released from Florida jail

WESTON, Fla., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Former Major League Baseball star Manny Ramirez was released from a jail in Florida Tuesday after being charged in an alleged domestic altercation.
Ramirez left the Broward County lockup after being charged with domestic battery for allegedly striking his wife with an open hand.
While he took his time making his way to a waiting sport utility vehicle driven by a woman, Ramirez's only reply to reporters' questions was "no comment."
In a video posted on the Web site of NBC's Miami affiliate WTVJ-TV, Ramirez is seen grabbing a microphone from one reporter and throwing it, and then taking a mic away from another reporter while sitting in the SUV.
A police report stated Juliana Ramirez told the arresting officer she and her husband had been "involved in a dispute that escalated." She said he struck her in the left side of her face with an open hand, causing her to hit her head against the headboard of their bed.
The report said she called police, fearing the situation might worsen. She declined medical attention.
The former big leaguer told police he had grabbed his wife by the shoulders and shook her, causing her to hit her head on the headboard.
The 12-time all-star slugger had been removed by police officers from his Weston, Fla., home in handcuffs Monday, the celebrity news Web site TMZ reported.
The Web site said Juliana Ramirez left the house shortly after her 39-year-old husband was driven away in a police car.
The former Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians great retired this year after hitting 555 career homers over 18 seasons. His career was tainted by revelations he used performance enhancing drugs.
NCAA punishes Boise State
BOISE, Idaho, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- The NCAA Tuesday put Boise State on probation for three years and invoked other penalties for a string of rules violations in several sports.
The punishment also included a reduction in the number of football scholarships from 85 to 82 for three years including this year, and a one-year ban on post-season play for the women's tennis team.
The men's tennis team, and track and field and cross country teams for both genders also were affected.
In the football program, which is ranked fourth in the nation this season, the probe found recruiting violations that included impermissible housing and transportation benefits given 63 prospective athletes between the summers of 2005 and 2009.
"The vast majority of the violations found by the committee were agreed upon by the university," the NCAA said in a release.
School officials had proposed a self-imposed probationary period and other sanctions earlier this year. Boise State also fired its head women's coach and an assistant coach after determining players had been given cash and other unallowed benefits. Also caught in the scandal's fallout was longtime Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier, who resigned as the investigation unfolded.
Adelman to coach Timberwolves
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Rick Adelman has agreed to become the new coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, the NBA team confirmed Tuesday.
The Timberwolves said team officials and Adelman reached an agreement in principle for Adelman to become the 10th coach in the team's 21-season existence. He replaces Kurt Rambis, who was fired in July after posting a 27-102 record in his 2009-11 tenure with Minnesota.
Contract details weren't released but the Star Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis said it was thought to be a five-year deal worth $20 million.
Adelman, 65, most recently coached the Houston Rockets, who let him go after this past season. Adelman coached the Rockets for four seasons and was previously the coach at Portland (1988-93), Golden State (1995-97) and Sacramento (1999-2006).
He has an overall coaching record of 945-616. The wins total is eighth-best in NBA history.
Portland advanced to the NBA Finals under Adelman in 1990 and 1992 and his teams made the NBA playoffs in 16 of his 20 seasons.
Steelers' Colon has surgery
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon had a torn triceps muscle repaired Tuesday and will be out of action for an unspecified period, the team said.
Coach Mike Tomlin said the starter will miss "an extended period of time to say the least" and will likely go on injured reserve.
Colon, who missed all of last season with an Achilles injury, was hurt in the Steelers' loss to Baltimore Sunday.
Colon had started every game from 2007-09 after appearing in two games as a rookie in 2006.
With Colon on the shelf, Tomlin will have to rely on rookie Marcus Gilbert and second-year tackle Chris Scott.
