NFL: Detroit 27, Tampa Bay 20

TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Matthew Stafford gained 305 yards and found Calvin Johnson twice on scoring passes Sunday, boosting Detroit to a season-opening 27-20 victory over Tampa Bay.

Stafford hurled three TD passes in all as the Lions (1-0) won the first game of the season for the first time since 2007.

Johnson, meanwhile, caught six passes for 88 yards while Tony Scheffler reeled in the other score for Detroit.

Ndamukong Suh led a tough Lions defense that mostly stymied Tampa Bay until late in the game.

Josh Freeman completed 28-for-43 passes for 245 yards, one touchdown and one score for the Buccaneers (0-1).
